The Soul Needs Images and Imaging to “Know” Things
Both of today’s readings have images of water as a source of life. The Ezekiel passage is a beautiful image of wage bringing life in abundance. Verse 12 says, “But the river itself, on both banks, will grow fruit trees of all kinds. Their leaves won’t wither, the fruit won’t fail. Every month they’ll bear fresh fruit because the river from the Sanctuary flows to them. Their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing.” (The Message)
The John passage is the familiar story of the crippled man who had laid at the side of the healing pool for 38 years, but was never healed because there was nobody to help him into the pool at the right time. Jesus heals him, but more importantly empowers him. His warning to turn back or something worse will overtake you is what often happens when we are empowered, but then face difficulties.
