Chapter 11: Why Doesn’t Poverty Just Go Away?
Wess worked through his anger as he began to realize that poverty is more complex than it looks.
Under the Wheel. To go from abject poverty to simply an adequate situation requires 6 components—the spokes of a wheel.
- Economics.
- Health
- Learning
- Environment
- Social-political
- Spiritual
It’s All Spiritual. God is concerned with all of the spokes of the wheel as the Bible amply demonstrates.
What Is the Starting Point? Poor people feel overwhelmed because of their circumstances. They lose hope and can become fatalistic. Wess tells about the children of Haiti and their attitudes.
Getting at the Root. When a child says, “I matter” he has taken the first step out of poverty. Know that God cares for loves him gives a child the sense that he matters.
The Runner. A great story that made me teary eyed about a woman who encouraged a young boy who ended up an Olympic medal winner as a result.
