Two main streams in lament—protest and penitence.

PENITENCE. “… one important function of lament is to provide a space for repentance, for grief over one’s own wrongdoing or the wrongdoing of others. It can make a space for individual repentance or for corporate confession. Lament is a powerful tool for naming our own sins as well as our participation in sinful and unjust structures.”

PROTEST. A great example of protest in lament is Habbakkuk.

The Spirituals

Embodied Lament-Protests. Laments, along with lullabies and wedding songs, are common to all cultures. RE give some examples of embodied lament.

Lament Against Enemies. The cursing psalms and lament.
