9: The Thing About Pearls and Pigs
The line about not throwing pearls to pigs and how that relates to the previous section about not worrying. Bell discusses the point of the two passages. But his real point is how to read the Bible.
“That’s what’s so powerful about so much of the Bible. It’s about the disruption that occurs when you’re jarred out of your present mode of thinking and seeing.
It’s the moment of upheaval when you realize that the way you’re living or thinking or treating people isn’t working. You’re the one throwing pearls to pigs, and it’s absurd. And you need to stop.”
Review:
“the Bible was written by real people living in real places at real times.”
“there’s usually something going on just below the surface of the Bible.”
“You keep asking, hunting, searching, questioning, assuming that there’s more going on here.”
