Clothing

Clothing

Two interpretations of the verse, “The LORD God made garments of skin for Adam and his wife and clothed them.”. Winner had always thought he actually put skin on their bodies, essentially finished their creation. More common is the idea that God made clothing of animal skins for them (the way I had always interpreted it). <Fascinating.>

Our clothes reflect our identity. Paul tells us to be clothed in Christ. If we are clothed with Christ, that will shape our identity.

Clothing also creates bonds between people. The example of black mourning clothes was cited.

Clothing creates community. But, as it creates community, it also creates borders and boundaries. School uniforms are a way to minimize the borders that clothing can create. Clothing also indicates gender. But the clothing of Christ says no to the distinctions between male and female (and Jew/Greek and slave/free as well—all groups where clothing was used to distinguish who belonged to which group). As Christians we are called to break boundaries that exist, not reinforce them.

Clothing affects the way we move. <One reason I hate tight pants.>
