Psalm 62:1-8

Sermon to the German-Speaking Congregation, Barcelona, July 1928

Bonhoeffer uses verse one for his sermon:

My soul finds rest in God alone;
my salvation coms from him.

“The work soul is strange to us. Is there anything like a soul in our days, this age of machines, or warring commercial deals, in an age when fashion and sport dominate our world?” Bonhoeffer says as human beings, we need to take care of our souls.

There are 2 reasons we don’t find moments of rest very often.

We are nervous about quietness or rest. We are afraid to be alone with God lest in that quietness he will deal with us.

We know our poor our religious life is. Religion is hard work and requires discipline. You can’t get close to God just when you are in the mood. Communication with God must be practiced.

“It is a low of the world that it cannot give rest and peace. Only in God is there stillness and rest. … Augustine said, ‘You have created us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you.’”
