Commandment as a Big Push Over the Top
Without some kind of a prod or goad, humans will will take the path of least resistance. Laws and commandments provide that (perhaps incentive is a better word).
In the Matthew text, Jesus prods us to do something that can’t be done without being fully embraced in his love. He tells us to love our enemies. Pray for those who persecute us. I read that and nod my head and think “I can do that.” But in reality, I’m not very good at it. And, I have never really had any serious enemies or persecutors. I wonder how good I would be at loving them if I did?
