Why Is My Group Always Better Than Your Group?

The OT lesson is about Naaman being healed by Elisha. This was the text of Naas’ sermon on March 9th where he explored ridiculous obedience. Rohr points out that Naaman was the beneficiary of amazing grace even though he had to be convinced to participate. Still, it was the outsider (a diseased non-Jew) that got the grace.

Jesus uses this as an example of a prophet not being taken seriously in his own land. Rohr says, “He [Jesus] more than suggests that it is often the outsider who crosses borders of prejudice to receive the gift, while you remain smugly inside your synagogues.

Is the church today rejecting the prophet and not feeling the grace of God? It is worth pondering in this Lenten season.

“God of Israel, Samaria, Sidon, and Syria, are you really all the same God? Can I allow you to be free, or should you follow our rules and our theology?”
