Rewards and Punishments Are Inherent
The idea that collective reward or punishment was the mindset of the ancients was a new thought to me. The stories in the OT about whole nations being destroyed in wars is a reflection of that idea. So, when Ezekiel personalizes righteousness it changes the paradigm of the time.
"Ezekiel is saying loudly and strongly that your human life matters, your personal decisions and choices do define you. You have worth. Both individually and now! This gives a necessary significance, dignity, and urgency to the whole human journey.”
In the Matthew passage, Jesus ups the ante when he says ,"20For I tell you, unless your righteousness exceeds that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.” Wow, how can any human do that?
Rohr’s closing prayer is one for me: “Creator God, could it be true that you give me my human dignity and significance by asking so much of me? Do you respect me so much to hope that I could actually be like you?”
