Harmonizing the Last Words. Theologians over the centuries have tried to harmonize the last words of Christ. Until modern times, the common theme is that Jesus spoke them all, that they hang together, and were assigned to either Jesus’ humanity or his divinity.
Historical-Critical Approaches. A summary of the current approaches the last words.
A Canonical Approach. The Scriptures provide a truthful and sufficient witness to Jesus Christ. And, therefore, no gospel is sufficient on its own. Each of the gospels last words of Christ are examined for connection to laments and the conclusion is that all show lament, some more directly than others.
