The state of relationships between men and women not permanent, even though the words “love forever” are bandied about freely. Berry aims to address why and how to make them permanent.
Our bodies have been divided conceptually between right and left brain, stomach, hands, etc. We want to be authors of ourselves. But we are not. “… The human race is a great coauthorship in which we are collaborating with God and nature in the making of ourselves and one another.”
Berry argues that marriage is more than two people, but is the two people, plus their history together, plus their families, plus their place in the world, plus more.
Both human bodies and minds are headed into obsolescence.
